You are leaving the ironworks area, wandering into the wilderness of large forests and bogland. The area is called Florarna and is a beautiful, rugged and wild nature reserve, much resembling the northern parts of Sweden.

Florarna is the largest nature reserve in Uppland and consists of large boglands, old forests and little lakes. During summer you will be able to pick berries and during autumn the orange cloudberries make an eye-catching sight. Apart from the shy lynx, you might also see owl, black grouse, wood grouse and other wild animals in the nature reserve. Looking to the sky you might also, with a bit of luck, see the white-tailed eagle.

In Sweden, as well as in many other countries, a nature reserve is one of several ways to ensure long-term protection of valuable areas of nature. Keep in mind that special rules will apply to the various nature reserves. Follow this link  to the regulations applying to Florarnas nature reserve. Along the trail you will find rest spots where you might sit down and enjoy the silence and surrounding nature.

This part of the Viking trail is the same as part 12 of the Uppland trail  meandering through varied terrain of forests and boglands as well as stony paths.

Author’s recommendation

Safety information

June 2019. Please observe that the markings along the Vikingaleden trail are not complete yet. Some short sections still lack marking and signposts. We are sorry about the delay.

Tips and hints

You are walking along the Uppland and the Viking trail. Please follow trail markings. This part of the trail ends up at Risön, an 18th century farm  where you might also spend the night, either in your own tent or in the open cabin. You might also stay at the farm itself, subject to prior booking, between the months of May and October. Please contact the regional authority Länsstyrelsen  for further information.

Top up your water bottle at Österbybruk before you set out walking.

How do I estimate the time it will take me to walk the distance? About 3 kilometers per hour is a realistic estimate. But time should be added to make room for stopping at vantage points or enjoying a break. It is during the breaks, while you are enjoying nature, that your batteries will be recharged for further walking.
