This long stage, best done over two to three days, takes you to the edge of the outer archipelago and to the island of Korpo. You can decide to travel onward to the Åland Island and Mariehamn or return to Turku by bus. An interesting detour to the outer archipelago on MS Baldur is possible from Pärnäs (Stage 5)

The trail winds along old roads and through pretty villages. The landscape has evolved through the influence of generations of farmers and fishermen. Wolves were once driven into traps on the Pärnäs peninsula, it is now a Coast Guard Station.

There are no shops and only one summer café between the villages so remember to take enough food with you or order a packed lunch from your hotel or B&B. There are plenty of peaceful places for picnics where you can taste the landscape you are travelling through by enjoying locally produced products.

Remember to collect your last Finnish pilgrim’s stamp from the church in Korpo.

Safety information

The stage is mainly along secondary gravel roads, paths with approximately 9km on the main road. When walking along roads without pavements or cycle paths, please walk on the left side, facing the direction of traffic and be aware of oncoming cars.

The route is marked with the square logo of St Olav Ways and arrows. On easier sections, there may only be a couple of signs per kilometre.

Ticks are prevalent in long grass and damp vegetation. Although it is very unlikely to pick up a tick if you keep to the trail it is a good idea to conduct a tick check in the evening especially if you have been in places of lush vegetation. Tick tweezers are a good idea. More information about ticks here.

Snakes enjoy the archipelago and love rocky warm places. They are normally shy and will slither away but it is wise to keep an eye out for them. There are two snake species in the archipelago grass snakes and adders.

The archipelago is a sensitive area; please respect the nature and inhabitants of the archipelago. You can read about your rights and responsibilities according to everyman's right. Lighting fires is only allowed with the permission of the landowner when there is no general fire warning.

You should carry a first aid kit and mobile phone, 112 is the emergency number in Finland. We recomend the 112 Suomi  smart phone app which can helps the emergency services locate you if needed.

Destination

Galtby harbour or Korpo village

Turn-by-turn directions

Stage 4 is 33km from Nagu church to Korpo church. It is commonly split into two or three days depending on:

  • if you continue straight from stage 3
  • if your end destination is Korpo,
  • if you will make a detour to the outer archipelago from Pärnäs,
  • or if you will carry on to the Åland Islands.

The ferry service to Kökar, Sottunga and Långnäs in the Åland Islands does not depart daily and some departures leave Galtby early in the morning.

  1. The next shop is in Korpo village so stock up on provisions.
  2. From the Church walk down towards the harbour
  3. Turn left and follow the signs along Parkvägen
  4. Continue along Norrstrandsvägen
  5. 250m from Parkvägen, there is the possibility to make a detour to a troy town stone maze (Jungfrudans, Jatulintarha) along a short marked nature trail. The path is marked with blue paint and begins opposite Finnäsvägen. These mazes have probably been used in pilgramage rites in the 1300s by people unable to embark on longer pilgramages.
  6. At a sharp curve to the right, continue straight forward onto Sellmovägen.

Please note, in wet weather and if there are fallen trees, bikes need to be pushed for small sections in the middle of Sellmovägen.

  7. Sellmovägen is a quiet gravel road over 8km long, there are sections of tractor track and parts can be in bad condition after rain if heavy forestry machinery have used the trail. There is a picnic table at Samslax träsket lake towards the end of the road. The road was the main road through Nagu before the new archipelago road was made.
  8. If you wish to stay the night at Grännäs B&B you should turn off towards Väcklaxvägen at a large cross roads with a barrier after 1.8km along Sellmovägen. The way is not signposted. You can also arrange to be picked up by boat from Nagu village for a reasonable fee.
  9. After the lake, the road changes its name to Gallsvägen. At the main road, turn left and double back towards the village of Nagu for 500m.

To shorten the walk today follow this shortcut. Please note this route is not marked but is easy to follow.
Turn right instead of left at the main road and walk 900m until the sign Antböle on the left.
Follow Antbölevägen/ Antbölentie for 1.8km. At the end of the road turn left.
Follow Matnäsvägen/ Matnäsintie for 400m, Djupdalsvägen/ Djupdalintie is now on your right and you will again see the St Olav Ways signs and be back on the trail.

  10. Turn right onto Tolkströmsvägen for 4km. There is a bridge between two inlets about half way down the road.
  11. Turn right onto Mattnäsvägen for 3.5km. There is a small Kiosk beside the road selling local farm products.
  12. Kaptensgården B&B is found in Risis village just before the next turning
  13. Turn left onto Djupdalsvägen for 1.5km
  14. Take a right on Spinkvägen and walk 800m to the main road.
  15. Pärnäs is only 1.2km after turning left onto the main archipelago road.
  16. The ferry Ms Baldur for the islands Nötö, Aspö, Jurmo and Utö leaves from here, (stage 5).
There is a summer cafe at Pärnäs
  17. There is a regular short ferry crossing to Korpo.
  18.  The main road on Korpo is narrow and at ferry departure and arrival times busy.
  19. At Retais village after just over 2km, you will find Hotel Nestor with restaurant Backpocket and B&B Fafas. The Barefoot Nature Path is a short walk beyond Hotel Nestor. The path features temporary landscape art installations by international artists. Kick off your shoes and enjoy some art in tranquil surroundings.
  20. The ferry to Åland from Galtby is 5km and Korpo village and church 7km.
  21. After 4km turn right to Galtby or continue for 3km to Korpo.
  22. In Korpo village there is a K market grocery store and restaurant/ bar Hjalmar’s.  There is a variety of accommodation in Korpo village. Korpo church has a wooden statue of St. Olav and interesting paintings on the ceiling.
  23. The Archipelago Centre at Korpoström is a further 8km. It can be reached by bus. There are occasional departures from the centre to the outer archipelago and Kökar. This section is not signposted but easy to follow.
