The Saints Trail begins in Uppland, from Uppsala. There is also a connection from Roslagen, Grisslehamn, the Viking Trail. The Älvkarleby-Mårtsbo stage is the first stage to reach the northern shore of Dalälven.

From Dalälven, the trail follows a connection between the trail of Uppland (Upplandsleden) and the trail of Gästrike (Gästrikeleden), up to Hemlingby, Gävle. The Viking Trail (Vikingaleden) enters here from the stage Marma to Älvkarleby. The trail runs through large forest areas but also passes through villages, such as Mårtsbo old school - the target of the day for the hike.

In this stage, the Helgon Trail largely follows the Gästrikeleden. Start at Älvkarleby in Uppland, an exciting area with the river Dalälven, the falls in Älvkarleby, and so on. The stage continues through the forests towards the villages Kubbo and Mårtsbo.

Gästrikeleden is marked with orange arrows, painted tree trunks and posts. You will need to be attentive sometimes, as several joints cross each other. Follow the marking!

Rest areas and wind shelters are available along the trail.

The stage ends at the river/the canal, by a small waterfall and a ready-made bathing spot with a jetty. There is also a bench for sitting and relaxing at this quiet place.

A small forest road goes from the bathing area up to Mårtsbo old school, where you can book an overnight stay in advance.

Author’s recommendation

Make sure to book the lodging in Mårtsbo old school in good time, and ask them if it is possible to get breakfast with the booking. There is a kitchen for self-service  there, but no shop.
